The Difference Between Domain Renewal, Transfer, and Expiry
Renewal means extending the time your domain remains active.
Every domain name is registered for a specific period (usually 1 year by default). Before it expires, you need to renew it to keep ownership.
----> How to Renew Your Domain:
Tip: Enable Auto-Renew to ensure your domain never expires accidentally.
A domain transfer means moving your domain from one registrar (provider) to another — for example, from GoDaddy or Namecheap to Thamara Cloud.
---> Why You Might Transfer:
----> How a Transfer Works:
Important:
Domains cannot be transferred within 60 days of initial registration or a previous transfer, as per ICANN policy.
When a domain isn’t renewed by its expiry date, it becomes inactive — your website and email stop working.
However, most registrars (including Thamara Cloud) offer a grace period to renew before it’s released publicly.
----> Typical Expiry Timeline:
|
Period |
What Happens |
|
Day 0 (Expiry Date) |
Domain stops resolving — website and email go offline. |
|
Days 1–30 (Grace Period) |
You can still renew the domain at the regular price. |
|
Days 31–60 (Redemption Period) |
You can recover the domain, but extra fees may apply. |
|
After 60 Days |
Domain becomes available for public registration — you lose ownership. |
Tip: Always keep your email address updated in your domain contact info to receive renewal reminders.
