IMAP vs. POP3: Which One Should You Use?

Summary:-

When setting up your email on a phone or computer, you will be asked to choose between IMAP and POP3. These are two different ways to connect to the Thamara mail server. Choosing the right one depends on how many devices you use and how you want to manage your storage.

The Comparison:

  • IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol):

    • How it works: It syncs your emails across all devices. If you read an email on your phone, it shows as read on your laptop.

    • Best for: Users who access email from multiple devices (Phone, Tablet, PC).

    • Pros: Everything is always in sync; if your phone is lost, your emails are still safe on our server.

  • POP3 (Post Office Protocol):

    • How it works: It downloads the emails from our server to your specific device and usually deletes them from the server afterward.

    • Best for: Users who only use one device and have a limited internet connection, or want to save server disk space.

    • Pros: You can read your emails offline, and it frees up space on your hosting account.

Tip for Thamara Users:

We strongly recommend using IMAP. In today's world, most people switch between mobile and desktop throughout the day. IMAP ensures you never miss a message. However, keep an eye on your Email Disk Usage in cPanel, as IMAP stores everything on the server.
